Creating Comfort
At the Ronald McDonald House in Dallas, a Beacon of Light illuminates the night sky so children getting treatment at the nearby hospital can be comforted knowing their parents are resting close by. Inside, La-Z-Boy is comforting families in their special way having donated an entire house of furniture worth $300,000.
When the Ronald McDonald House in Dallas opened the doors to its new House on December 9, 2009, it doubled the capacity of the previous House, to now serve 60 families each night. During the construction phase, the staff and volunteers were committed to ensuring the House still provided the comfort and home-away-from-home atmosphere treasured by families in the previous House.
“The outside was landscaped, a patio to grill and eat outside was created and a meditation garden was installed for families, said Executive Director, Barbara McDermott. “But, we didn’t want to only provide comfort for the families staying at the House. Since the hospital was only steps away, we installed a Beacon of Light on top of the House to illuminate the night sky so children getting treatment at Children’s Medical Center can look out and see where their parents are resting close by. It is one of the most treasured design elements of the House.”
The staff and volunteers set out to add the details inside as well – toy rooms, libraries and arts and craft rooms transformed the House. Faced with the need to fill 60,000 square feet with furniture, the official furniture provider for Ronald McDonald House Charities, La-Z-Boy, stepped up in a big way.
La-Z-Boy customarily donates four furniture pieces a year to the Ronald McDonald Houses in U.S. and Canada. For the Dallas Ronald McDonald House, the local La-Z-Boy licensee knew that wouldn’t be enough. He donated an entire house of furniture with more than 300 pieces to outfit the Great Room, individual rooms and some common areas. This gift is valued at $300,000.
“As one of the first and oldest La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries operators in the country, we are thrilled to give back to the community that has made us successful,” said Lewis Brown Jr., founder and president of Lebco Industries, L.P., which operates 13 La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and Houston. “This donation to the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas is the largest our franchise has ever made, and in fact, it's the largest that La-Z-Boy nationally has given.”
Overall, La-Z-Boy has been busy creating comfort for families at Ronald McDonald Houses and Family Rooms across the U.S. and Canada. Since the sponsorship launched last year, La-Z-Boy has donated close to 1,000 pieces of furniture valued at nearly $1 million.
